The journey
A8, A10 to Genoa, then the A12, exit Carrodano-Levanto or La Spezia. The border is crossed at Ventimiglia; tolls included. A stop in Genoa or Sestri Levante is recommended.
Where to drop your bags
Each village has its access road, but few parking spaces and pedestrian-only lanes: the last stretch is on foot. Most travellers stay in La Spezia or Levanto, with its long sandy beach and easily accessible hotels, ideal for families. Hikers leave their suitcases behind: your chauffeur can deliver them to the hotel in the last village, as close as possible.
Train, footpaths and seasons
Between Levanto and La Spezia, a train runs along the coast and stops in every village; it is packed at midday in summer. The Sentiero Azzurro, which charges a fee, sometimes closes after a heavy storm. Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant; from November to March, the villages regain their calm.
Flavours and the Gulf of Poets
Taste pesto with trofie, and sciacchetrà, the sweet wine born on the terraces of Manarola. Across the Gulf of La Spezia, Lerici and Portovenere round off the stay.

Possible pick-up: Nice airport, Cannes, Monaco, Nice-Ville station. Drop-off: La Spezia station, Levanto, village entrances, Portovenere. From Monaco, the round trip fits into a day with an early start; from Cannes or Saint-Tropez, plan to stay overnight instead.

Good shoes: even without hiking, the villages are explored by way of steps.
